Die Nachtzuggesellschaft European Sleeper startet nächste Woche. Elmer van Buuren und sein Geschäftspartner Chris Engelsman erkannten die beginnende Renaissance der Schiene in Europa als Chance und ergriffen sie.

Wir sprachen mit Elmer van Buuren, Mitbegründer von European Sleeper, über die Herausforderungen und Erfolge beim Aufbau seines neuen Schwellenunternehmens. „Seit mehr als 20 Jahren träume ich von einer eigenen Eisenbahngesellschaft“, sagt Elmer van Buuren.

Der Traum des niederländischen Geschäftsmannes wird endlich wahr. Das von ihm 2021 mitgegründete Nachtzugunternehmen European Sleeper wird nächste Woche starten.

Elmer van Buuren und sein Geschäftspartner Chris Engelsman erkannten die beginnende Zug-Renaissance in Europa als Chance und ergriffen sie: „Ich habe beschlossen, es jetzt zu tun, weil Nachtzüge in aller Munde sind.“

Euronews Travel sprach mit Elmer vor der Inbetriebnahme des Nachtzuges Berlin-Amsterdam-Brüssel am 25. Mai.

Vor welchen Herausforderungen stand der europäische Schläfer?

Selbst mit 16 Jahren Erfahrung in der Bahnbranche war es nicht einfach, ein Nachtzugunternehmen von Grund auf neu zu gründen. „Es ist sehr schwierig und herausfordernd, eine internationale Bahnverbindung aufzubauen“, sagt Elmer, der zuvor als Zugbegleiter bei der niederländischen Bahn gearbeitet hat. Seitdem ist er in den Bereichen Bahnprojektmanagement, Verkehrsüberwachung und Beratung tätig.

Insbesondere die Koordination zwischen den Ländern ist eine echte Herausforderung. „In jedem Land gibt es unterschiedliche Organisationen, die für den Zeitplan verantwortlich sind“, erklärt er. Auch die Arbeiten an der Strecke sind nicht koordiniert, und da es meist nachts ist, kommt es oft zu Unordnung im Zeitplan.

„Wir versuchen, wirklich transparent zu sein und alle über Änderungen auf dem Laufenden zu halten“, sagt Elmer.

Neben Fahrplanproblemen müssen sich Betreiber auch mit der Frage auseinandersetzen, wo Züge geparkt, gewartet und gereinigt werden sollen, wenn sie tagsüber nicht genutzt werden.

„Wir brauchen eine klare Strategie, wenn wir wollen, dass mehr Menschen die Bahn statt Flugzeug oder Auto nehmen“, sagt Elmer. „Das bedeutet, dass wir viel mehr Züge auf die Gleise bringen müssen, aber auch, dass wir viel mehr Platz brauchen, um sie zu bedienen.“

Er sagt, dass mehr Investitionen in die Wartungsinfrastruktur erforderlich seien. „Und es liegt in der Verantwortung der Mitgliedsstaaten in Europa, dies zu ermöglichen.“

Ein weiteres Problem besteht darin, eine ausreichende Anzahl von Waggons für die neuen Dienste bereitzustellen. Das Unternehmen modernisiert derzeit sein rollendes Material, um seine Dynamik aufrechtzuerhalten.

Woher kommt das Geld?

Die Finanzierung war nicht immer einfach. „Wir sind ein neu gegründetes Unternehmen und können nicht auf langjährige Erfahrung im Zugbetrieb zurückblicken“, sagt Elmer. Aus der Sicht eines Geldgebers ist es also sehr riskant.

Noch schwieriger ist es, langfristige Investitionen zu bekommen. Bahnbetreiber müssen jedes Jahr Gleiskapazitäten beantragen. „Und das bedeutet, dass man nicht wirklich beweisen kann, dass man sein Produkt in den nächsten zehn Jahren produzieren kann“, erklärt Elmer, der sich zur Finanzierung seines Unternehmens dem Crowdfunding zuwandte.

Im Mai 2021 sammelte European Sleeper 500.000 € Startkapital durch den Verkauf von Aktien an über 350 Privatanleger. In einer neuen Runde wurden kurz vor dem Sommer 2022 Aktien für 2.000.000 Euro an 1.400 neue Anleger verkauft. Jetzt setzt Elmer auf die Hilfe der EU, um Hindernisse zwischen den Mitgliedsstaaten abzubauen.

„Wenn wir einen grenzüberschreitenden Rahmenvertrag hätten, der uns die Kapazitäten für die nächsten zehn Jahre garantiert, würde das das Investitionsrisiko deutlich reduzieren und Geldgeber anlocken.“

Es gebe bereits einen EU-Rechtsrahmen, der dies unterstützen werde, fügt Elmer hinzu, „aber wir brauchen Mitgliedsstaaten und Infrastrukturmanager, um dies zu ermöglichen.“

War die Kraft des Europäischen Schläfers anders?

European Sleeper schließt sich einer Handvoll anderer Betreiber an, die Nachtzüge in ganz Europa anbieten. Spitzenreiter ist Nightjet aus Österreich, gefolgt von Snälltåget aus Schweden. Auch Frankreichs Mitternachtszug startet im Jahr 2025.

„Natürlich sind wir per Definition Konkurrenten“, sagt Elmer, „aber wir arbeiten auch zusammen, weil wir vor den gleichen Herausforderungen stehen.“ Wir wissen auch, dass keiner von uns allein dem gesamten Kontinent dienen kann. Ich würde also sagen, dass wir grundsätzlich freundliche Konkurrenten sind. ".

Was können Sie erwarten, wenn Sie mit einem europäischen Schlafwagen reisen?

European Sleeper bietet drei Klassen an. Schlafwagen sind am komfortabelsten und kosten ab 129 € pro Person für die Hin- und Rückfahrt von Berlin nach Brüssel. Darin enthalten ist das Frühstück kurz vor dem Ziel. Sie verfügen über Etagenbetten für bis zu drei Personen, Waschbecken und Ruhebereich.

Kleine Gruppen und Familien können Schlafwagen buchen (ab 89 € pro Person, inklusive Frühstück), die Platz für vier oder sechs Personen bieten. Preisbewusste Reisende können einen Sitzplatz (ab 59 €) mit sechs Personen pro Sitzplatz wählen. Abteil. Wer sollte mit dem European Sleeper reisen?

Was kommt als nächstes für den europäischen Schläfer?

European Sleeper plant, seine Route Brüssel-Berlin im Frühjahr 2024 nach Prag zu verlängern.
