From the official website

Keith was born in New York, near Brooklyn. His mother had been a Big Band singer, his father his teacher. Before he was two years old, his mother said that Keith had perfect pitch when he sang his baby songs. A year later, his family moved to California and settled in the newly developed orchards of the San Fernando Valley, just a short drive from Hollywood, which would play an important role in Keith's future.

Keith's parents made sure that he learned to play the guitar and piano at a very young age. He liked the piano better, but he got bored playing the long classical pieces. So instead of learning to read sheet music, he memorized each piece and pretended to be reading the website when his teacher was there. But his grandfather, who founded Jaguar Records, the first rock and roll label, taught Keith to play chords on the piano...and that was the end of classical music for him. From that moment, Keith began to write and sing his own songs. He was only 6 years old at the time.

When he was 11 years old, Keith signed a recording contract with Decca Records, singing his own songs. Although photos of him appeared in teen magazines and his single had minor success, the industry didn't know how to promote such a young artist. Keith was very disappointed and, at 14, he felt like a total failure, a very difficult 'been' for someone who has been groomed all his life to be a pop star.

Keith was 15 years old when he first ran away from home. He started a journal that very day, and for years, as he searched for musical adventure and spiritual truth, he wrote about his journey. Keith was of Jewish origin but grew up reading the New Testament. He called it "a confusing mix" that left him deeply dissatisfied. His journey led him to drugs, oriental mysticism, and free love.

When Keith was 19 years old, he met a fellow seeker/musician named Melody. They were inseparable and married a year later; now he had a partner while he continued his spiritual search. Then, just when he almost gave up hope, Keith found the truth he was looking for. He was now 21 years old and has never looked back.

Keith grew up reading about Jesus in the Bible, but was confused when he found out he was Jewish, a fact his family had kept from him. But now what puzzled him before made sense as Keith proudly told the world, "I'm a Jewish Christian." Once Keith opened his heart to Jesus, he and Melody opened their home. Anyone who needed it, or who wanted to get off drugs, or get off the street, was welcome. Of course, they always heard a lot about Jesus in what became affectionately known as "The Greenhouse."

Keith's life not only took a radical turn, but he was a highly-skilled musician and songwriter, and all his songs changed as well. His search for stardom was over. And now his songs reflected the sheer emotion of meeting Jesus and seeing his own life radically changed. Keith's spiritual intensity not only pushed him beyond most people's comfort zones, it constantly pushed him beyond his own places of contentment.

Somewhat reluctantly, Keith was thrust into a “John the Baptist” type of ministry, calling on believers to wake up, repent, and live a life that resembled what they said they believed. Keith felt that he would have met Jesus sooner if it weren't for Christians leading double lives. He made the audience squirm by saying, “If you praise and adore Jesus with his mouth, and his life does not praise and adore him, something is wrong!”

The radical commitment Keith preached was also the kind of faith he wanted his own life to demonstrate. Of Jesus Keith said: “Loving him must be our cause. He can take care of many other causes without us, but he cannot make us love him with all our hearts. This is the work we must do. Everything else is an imitation."

Keith's songs were often born during his own spiritual struggles. When he pointed a finger at hypocrisy, he knew he had four fingers pointing at himself. He wrote honest and vulnerable lyrics, but left room for God to damn the rest of us as well. He knew that the journey to heaven often meanders through rocky valleys and saw no value in portraying his journey in any other way.

With Keith's honesty, he would have been irritated by a superficial reading of his own life. After all, Keith was in the spotlight as he grew up in Jesus. So when he made mistakes, he talked about them to portray his life honestly. He believed that we miss out on something essential when we neglect the frailty and humanity of others and ourselves. He knew that he was far from perfect, but he had a burning hunger and thirst for justice.

Keith prayed constantly, asking the Holy Spirit, "Please change my heart and convict me of my sin." And when he was sentenced, he took action. If he needed to repent, he was sorry. If he needed to call someone to apologize, he did it.

Keith's views on many issues were often controversial, especially when it came to charging for his ministry. With his albums topping the industry charts. Keith decided to distribute his albums for what people could pay for, even for free. Keith's heart was to make sure that those who couldn't afford to buy his music could get it. Since Keith and Melody felt that his songs were musical messages from the ministry and they did not want anyone to be left out due to lack of funds. By the last count, at least 15 years ago, more than 200,000 albums were sent to prisons and the poor at no cost.

The same problem arose with Keith's concerts, which he felt were ministry nights. After a few years of trying different ways to finance his shows, there was only one idea that gave him peace. He decided that his concerts would be free so that everyone he wanted could come. The ministry would rent a hall or stadium, and Keith would accept an offer from LDM to help defray the costs. He and Melody did not receive any of the offers because they could support themselves on royalties from their songs.

Playing free shows along with Keith's new album policy were moves that sent shockwaves through the Christian music industry, causing some record labels, bookstores and other artists to question his motives. Some thought he wanted to undermine the system and make others look bad. But that was not his heart and in the end it was understood that he was only following his convictions.

The Lord took Keith from concerts of 20 or less to stadiums of 12,000 people. At his concerts, Keith would always give an altar call and lead thousands and thousands to the Lord, and many of them steadfastly reaffirmed their lives to serve the Lord.

Keith began appearing on many television and radio shows. He talked about his walk with God and played a song or two. But his heart was to please the Lord. His childhood dream of becoming a superstar had been wiped from his heart years before with something better: being a servant of God.

Keith said, “I just want to build God's Kingdom and watch it grow, not my own. If someone writes a great poem, no one praises the pencil he used, they praise whoever created the poem. Well, I'm just a pencil in the hands of the Lord. Don't praise me, praise Him!"

For Keith, knowing Jesus was one thing. Becoming more like Him was another. He struggled with the same things we all do: developing self-discipline, deadlines, bad attitudes, selfishness, and ministry issues that screamed for attention. He was also trying to disciple the 70 new believers who had come to join the LDM, which had now moved to East Texas. On top of all that, Keith still had music to write, articles to finish, and a growing family and wife to care for.

After struggling for years to live up to God's holiness, sometimes even questioning his own salvation, Keith has come to a deeper understanding of the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross, both to forgive his sins and to clothe him with His justice. It was as if a great weight had been lifted from his chest.

Not that Keith cared less about purity and holiness. But he was now more motivated by love and less by fear in his search for Jesus. He learned much more about the grace of God and the importance of simply stopping to behold his glory and enjoy his presence. Maybe that was what Keith loved the most.

In 1982, Keith and Melody traveled to Europe, including Greece and the UK, and their hearts were touched. every time they went Kith asked all the leaders what we could do, they all said, "Please tell the people we need to come help us."

KGPhotos-40

So Keith decided that on his fall 1982 tour he would challenge Christians in America to get out of their comfort zones and go out into the world to reach those who are hurting. To win souls, LDM booked large arenas for the fall tour, Melody wrote some missionary songs, and YWAM founder Loren Cunningham would come to speak about the needs of the world and call for missions.

Keith's heart went out completely to those who probably wouldn't show up at a concert or church. Keith wanted to go back to the streets and prisons the same way he and Melody did as new believers. He wanted to go to the mission fields of the nations and secular clubs to reach people with his music. However, it should not be so.

On July 28, 1982, a small plane crashed and Keith went home to be with Jesus. The accident also claimed the lives of his three-year-old son, Josiah, and his two-year-old daughter, Bethany. Melody was at home with her one-year-old daughter, Rebekah, and she was also six weeks pregnant with her fourth child, Rachel. Keith was only 28 years old.

Although Keith is now with Jesus, his life and ministry still have a great impact around the world. His songs and his passionate delivery are still changing lives. His writings are translated into many languages. Keith once said, "When he dies, I just want to be remembered as a Christian." It's safe to say that he achieved his goal and, perhaps, a bit more.

Keith Green was simply a man of conviction. When his convictions led him to an object of eternal value in the person of Jesus, he sold everything he had—ambitions, possessions, and dreams—to possess his love. In doing so, he became a devoted man. He also became a man remembered and yet forgotten by millions of people around the world.
